1 knitting needle (any size)
1 yard of yarn (any weight)
Of course... if you actually want to make anything after casting on, you'll need a pair of needles and a whole ball of yarn (or more!).
Also, if this is your first time casting on, you may have an easier time using larger needles and thicker yarn.
